Dive Smart. Get Back. Look Good.
Every club has a motto. Ours came from a dive boat in Key Largo.
Where It Started
Before Third Coast Scubiens was a club, it was two divers, Luke and Lance, taking a class in Key Largo from Jeff Knapp, an instructor at Horizon Divers in Key Largo, Florida. Jeff had a saying he repeated until it stuck:
"Don't die. Get back to the boat. Look good."
It made us laugh. It also stayed with us long after the class was over, because underneath the humor it was exactly right. Strip diving down to its essentials and that's the whole job.
Our version is a little more polite:
Dive smart. Get back. Look good.
Same idea. Fewer awkward looks when it's printed on a shirt.
Dive Smart
Follow the rules of diving.
That sounds simple, and it is. But the rules exist for reasons, and most of them were learned the hard way. Dive within your training and your experience. Plan the dive and dive the plan. Know your gas, know your limits, and respect the conditions in front of you, not the conditions you hoped for.
Diving smart also means understanding why the rules are what they are. A rule you understand is a rule you'll actually follow when you're cold, tired, or tempted to stretch a dive "just a little."
Get Back
Always be safe.
Every dive has one non-negotiable goal: come back. Back to the line, back to the boat or the shore, back to your buddy, back to the people waiting for you at home.
A dive isn't a success because of what you saw. It's a success because everyone came back and wants to go again. If something doesn't feel right, calling the dive is always an option, and it's always the right one. The wreck will still be there next weekend.
Look Good
Be in trim. Don't do stupid stuff.
Yes, this one is partly a joke. Nobody looks especially elegant waddling to the water in a drysuit. But "look good" is about something real: a diver who is weighted correctly, in good trim, calm, in control, and moving with purpose.
That diver isn't stirring up silt, isn't crashing into the wreck, isn't fighting their buoyancy, and isn't improvising something they've never trained for. Good trim and good judgment look good, because competence looks good.
Why It Matters
A lot of diving concepts get overlooked. Not because divers don't know them, but because they fade into the background after certification. Buoyancy, trim, planning, gas management, knowing when to call a dive. They get taught once and then quietly forgotten.
Our tagline is meant to keep them in front of us. Three short phrases that cover what matters most on every single dive.
So the next time you're gearing up, run through it:
Am I diving smart?
Is everyone going to get back?
Am I going to look good doing it?
Thanks, Jeff. We're still saying it.
Dive smart. Get back. Look good.
